Conflicting guidelines and chronic areas of confusion continue to increase the risks when coding and billing for mammography and other breast imaging services. This is especially problematic given the high volume of these procedures — one small mistake or omission, when repeated, can add up to significant issues. Mammography is possibly the most intensely scrutinized and debated medical procedure of our time, but there is virtually no disagreement on two points. First, there is no other breast cancer screening tool that has a better combination of sensitivity and specificity. Second, as practiced today, mammography could be better. This chapter reviews the basic features of, and factors involved in.

In order to x-ray the breast, a "softer" type of x-ray is used than for other parts of the body. Mammography is designed for imaging the soft tissue of the breasts as opposed to "harder" x-rays designed to penetrate and image the bones of the body. X-ray mammography is the only approved examination to screen for breast cancer.   Mammography is a special type of x-ray imaging that uses high contrast, high-resolution film and an x-ray system designed specifically for mammography to create detailed images of the breast. Use of high quality film and screen cassettes is critical to creating the best image quality.

The x-rays used for mammographic imaging of the breasts cannot penetrate silicone or saline implants well enough to image the overlying or underlying breast tissue. Therefore, some breast tissue (approximately 25%) will not be seen on the mammogram, as it will be covered up by the implant.
